David Roth

"One of the reasons I write songs and play music is to try and bring more beauty into a world that needs more beauty." (David Roth)

"David Roth, a powerful new singer-songwriter has reached our hearts. With voices like his still singing, there's a certainty that the candle will remain lit, the hope reasserted and the dream still sung..." Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul & Mary)

"David writes and sings songs with a devastating combination of heartfelt wisdom and incisive wit. In my eyes he sets a new 'contemporary singer/songwriter' standard for the rest of us to aspire to, and it's a standard that is very, very high..." Christine Lavin

David Roth

- where song, spirit, and speaking meet …

"Meet You Where You Are"

The album "Pearl Diver" (2004) marked the beginning of an extremely fruitful cooperation between the American song poet David Roth and Günter Pauler from Stockfisch Records. Talking about his first encounter with the Chicago singer/songwriter David Roth, Pauler said at that time: "I was impressed by how he takes up vastly different topics with a self-confident intuition and turns them into works of art".

This hasn't changed at all after 16 years, and David Roth still shines with his newest album "Meet You Where You Are", which is released by Stockfisch Records on SACD as an audiophile-masterpiece and is a collection of wonderful songs from different periods of Roth's life between 1990 and 2018.

In his expressive songs David Roth tells anecdotes and stories from his life; he shares his personal memories and impressions, with which he communicates a pleasant charm – a charm, which, once experienced, isn't easy to withdraw from. The album, with its 12 songs and more than 50 minutes of music, is a pure balm for the ears! Mathias Pack

In addition to the well-known German guitarist and folk-musician Jens Kommnick, with whom Roth recorded all his basic guitar tracks in studio, this once again perfectly-arranged album brings together splendid musicians such as Beo Brockhausen, Manfred Leuchter (accordion), Hans-Jörg Maucksch (bass), and Lea Morris with her beautiful backing vocals.

"Will You Come Home"

A photograph album full of treasured memories - David Roth's third album with Stockfisch-Records "Will You Come Home". Singer/songwriter Roth transports the listener on a magical journey through highlights in his life.

David Roth is a musical portrait artist who conveys a wealth of stories, anecdotes and remembered scenes with a physically felt intensity. This album is reminiscent, too, of an much-loved anthology of poetry, like one of those marvellous books which one can simply open at any page. That extraordinary feeling of warmth and familiarity that takes us by surprise when listening to this music comes from the sheer magic of the melodies, the mellow harmonies, the irresistible guitar sounds and David Roth's voice. And not least because the message is universal: happiness and serenity, sadness, excited anticipation, gratitude, a dash of regret - and not least the humour lurking in chance observations.

In a snowstorm like the one that created havoc along America's coastline recently, David Roth's "Will You Come Home" would be the THE music for weathering the storm. Being snowed has its advantages: these songs are like much-loved guests - how nice that they cannot leave.

When we planned the Vinyl-Edition of "Will You Come Home" we could not make up or mind, which CD titles should be quitted because of the LP´s limited running time. Therefore we decided in favour of a Double-LP. And now the side-length became really perfect for a four-sided 45 rpm cut.

"More Pearls"

David Roth about "More Pearls":

"more pearls "came out of a casual conversation Günter and I had in early 2005. We were on another subject when he asked if I’d ever considered making a collection of songs by other songwriters (“evergreens”, he called them). Truth is I’d been thinking about it for years but had never really honed in on such a project...until that moment. “Let me choose some songs” I replied, “and tell me what you think of the list.” A few short weeks later I was back in Northeim at Stockfisch with Chris Jones."

"As I thought about what it was with these particular songs and writers that drew me near, I was also reminded where I’d first heard each one and how they’d made their mark in my psyche and helped guide me down this path. All are joined with a thread that weaves compassion, empathy, longing, freedom, justice, wonder, reflection, peace, and humility. Though it’s been years since I’ve played some, like cherished old friends they’ve been exhilarating to revisit, relearn, rediscover, and gain new insight from."

So Günter Pauler recorded David Roth performing a collection of famous and not that famous „evergreens“ of the anglo-american songwriting: „Song For You Far Away“ (James Taylor), „I Will“ (Lennon/McCartney), „Blowin´ In The Wind“ (Bob Dylan), „Streets Of London“ (Ralph McTell), „American Tune“ (Paul Simon), „You´ve Got A Friend“ (Carole King) and 8 other pearls.

"Pearl Diver"

The songs of David Roth stimulate all of the listener’s senses... His clear and soulful voice conveys so much emotion that it can be frightening, at first – such is the intensity that he projects. Every word is carefully formed and sounds absolutely unique. The stories he sings reveal themselves as reality. David Roth has not invented these stories, and why should he?

The songs of David Roth appear at first to be harmless, but every word counts: "John & Josie" describes an experience that makes it crystal clear that things are not always as they appear. "That Kind of Grace" is an exemplary portrayal of the all-pervading violence in today’s society.

And then there are the very personal songs that allow the listener to discover almost forgotten memories, - brought to life through the imagery of the lyrics. David Roth is an observer – one with a keen and honest eye. He speaks to the listener’s intellect via the heart.

Producer Günter Pauler desdcribes his first encounter with the singer-songwriter: "I was amazed at the surety, with which David Roth turns such diverse themes as the career of a basketball player and the closing of a bakery into works of art. It would unfortunately be two years before our working schedules would coincide and this album could be recorded."

David Roth was born in Chicago and lives on Cape Cod – a domicile for musicians and artists, a slightly different America. He has already released 6 CDs in the US – for his Stockfisch debut, he made his way to the Stockfisch studio in Northeim, Germany and recorded 12 wonderful songs and one instrumental piece. An outstanding album – intelligent, poetic and very emotional.
